Deep Freeze 2010
Alberta Avenue sets the stage this weekend for the third annual 'Byzantine Winter Festival'
What: Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival
When: Saturday, January 9 (10AM-9PM)-Sunday, January 10 (Noon-6PM)
Where: Arts on the Ave (9210-118 Ave./ 780-471-1580
VARIOUS winter-themed activities are what you can expect at this year's Deep Freeze Festival, which has adopted a "Magical Kingdom of TomFoolery" theme this season. From January 9th-10th some 100 artists will entertain those willing to bare the cold--although there will be warming tents with free hot chocolate, and not all activities are outdoors--for the free event.
"Celebrating the cultures, foods, music, sights and smells of the past and blending them with the new cultures in our community is the essence of the [festival]," said Deep Freeze producer Christy Morin. "We can't wait to celebrate winter with you!"
The program promises street hockey, live music, ice sculptures, snow carving, ice skating, old tyme curling, and a so-called ice slide during the weekend. The festival will also offer ethnic food, an outdoor mummer's play, storytelling, an arts market & gallery, face painting, balloon arts, craft workshops, horse & wagon rides, and the "Family Winter Obstacle Course."
Edmonton-based "Best Canadian Reggae Band 2009" winners Souljah Fyah will perform on Saturday as part of the "Melt the Deep Freeze Dance" (7-11PM), though this particular event is $10 a ticket (free for ages 17 and under). On Sunday there will be performances by French Canadian musician Jason Kodie and French Canadian dance troupe Zèphyr.
Tickets will also need to be purchased for all food & drinks, including at Saturday's "Baileys Ice Bar" (8-11PM). The rest of the fest is free for all ages, though organziers encourage visitors to bring a non-perishable food donation for the Edmonton Food Bank.
