BY popular demand, the Edmonton Opera presents the return of Gilbert & Sullivan's classic comic opera The Pirates of Penzance, which will be performed at the Jubilee Auditorium for three nights next month (February 6th, 9th and 11th).

The conductor-director team of Peter Dala and Robert Herriot brings the famed show back to the Edmonton stage once again, following their recent productions of Daughter of the Regiment and the award-winning HMS Pinafore.

Pirates dates back more than 130 years, when it officially premiered in New York City on New Year's Eve 1879, and it's since become a Broadway staple that has captured numerous major awards.

The story centers around a young man named Frederic, who falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of the General of a band of pirates he's just officially become a part of. "This sunny delight in the midst of winter owes its hilarity to a series of misunderstandings, impossibly ludicrous rules, and the indomitable (if misguided) spirit of young love," reads the Opera's program.

Pirates will be sung in English with English subtitles projected just above the stage. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster over the phone (780-451-8000) or online (www.ticketmaster.ca). "Don't miss the adventure in this topsy-turvy world of fools."
