Reason #19 of '101 Reasons Why I Heart Edmonton'

Image
#YEG Online Community by emil tiedemann S OCIAL media has forever changed our World Wide Web. It’s changed why we go online, when and where we go online, and even who goes online, and there’s no going back now! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, blogs, podcasts, and the many other virtual social hubs have become a part of most people’s daily - and in some cases, hourly - lives.  How often have you seen someone glued to their smartphone or tablet on a bus or at your dinner table, or even walking down a busy street?! Some would argue that social media has turned civilization into that zombie apocalypse the movies and TV shows kept warning us about. The lack of manners and conversation is a common modern day pet peeve that is only getting worse as the generation born connected grows up.    Some of the most respected and well-known influencers in Edmonton's social media. Zombies aside, social media isn’t all that bad. Folks use it to reach out and engage, to...

Some of the latest happenings in Edmonton... BY EMIL TIEDEMANN F estival season has officially arrived, as events are on the verge or are in full swing as we speak. In just its third year, the unique Creative Age Festival has already begun, starting on June 8 and running until next Wednesday ( June 16 ). The 9-day event showcases our talented senior citizens who are somehow involved in film, theatre, music, visual arts, literary arts, and dance. "It encourages seniors to become more involved in arts programs and celebrates the contributions that senior artists have made in the arts fields," reads the CAF's official website . "A festival centered on these themes promotes healthy aging and attracts more seniors into creative fields." For a full program of the third annual Creative Age Festival click here . S peaking of festivals, Edmonton will celebrate Irish culture with the 6-day Serca Festival of Irish Theatre , which will feature four mainstage plays, music,...

A Few Minutes with...Brittney Le Blanc

It's Brittney, bitch! 'I Heart' gets to know one of Edmonton's prevalent social media darlings... BY EMIL TIEDEMANN "I NSTANT teleportation," answered Brittney Le Blanc , when The Unknown Studio asked her what "super power" she'd prefer most. "I wouldn't have to worry about parking, I'd get more sleep, I'd cover WAY more news and stories...I'd be unstoppable. Plus, I could travel more." That says a lot about Le Blanc, a local media "wonderkid" and prolific Twitterer who's lived in Edmonton all her life. She works long hours, enjoys covering the goings-on of our mutual hometown, and seems to know everyone who is anyone in it. Seriously! I've seen photos of Ms. Le Blanc posing next to software developer & fellow social media guru Mack D. Male , Olympic gold medalist Kevin Martin , and even Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach . Nice! The former NAIT student ( Radio & Television Arts ) has spent the las...

We Were On a Break!

Image
H EY Edmonton, I just wanted to give you an update on the future of I Heart Edmonton , for anyone who cares. I know that many of you have lost your reason for getting up in the morning when you read that " WE WERE ON A BREAK " ( Ross , Friends )! But I've come to the realization that the world is just not the same without our little site. By the way, for any of you without a sense of humour, I'm a sarcastic kinda guy, so please don't think that I actually believe I Heart Edmonton is the best thing since sliced bread. And while we're on the subject, I don't think sliced bread is all that great, so.... Anyways, what I'm saying is that I Heart Edmonton will be back soon (early April ). I'm pretty excited to get back to work on this hyperlocal venture that gives me (and you) an insight on all the things going on in our amazing city, as well as all the innovative and intriguing projects in the works. Edmonton has a bright future, and I hope I Heart Ed...

A Few Minutes with...Mack D. Male

Software developer and social media guru Mack D. Male takes part in our brief Q&A about our favourite city BY EMIL TIEDEMANN M OST 26-year-olds I know can barely figure out the countless apps on their iPhones or can even put together a proper sentence ( don't judge me! ), but I have no doubt that our latest Q&A participant, Mack D. Male , could tackle both missions simultaneously with his hands tied behind his back! Ahh...actually, that probably couldn't be done. Scratch that! Let's just say that Mack D. Male isn't like most 26-year-olds I know. "I'm a geek who lives in Edmonton," Male writes of himself. He's just being modest. Along with a couple of friends, Male founded Paramagnus Developments , a "privately held company headquartered in Edmonton, focused on building social applications and services," and has been for the last 10 years. Currently the team is working on ShareEdmonton , a local aggregation platform for Edmontonians an...
