Get to Know Who's Running: Rick Comrie (Mayoral Candidate)

By Emil Tiedemann

There happens to be a Municipal Election coming up in Edmonton on October 18, 2021, and I think it's important for locals to get to know the City Council candidates running for their particular ward (as well as their Mayoral candidates, of course). I chose to get more involved in the election this year and so wanted to give each candidate a chance to tell us a little about themselves, their vision, and why you should vote for them. I have sent a 10-question questionnaire to each of the 2021 Edmonton Municipal Election candidates and will post their responses (100% as written) here as they come in. With that said, let's get to know...

Mayoral Candidate

Rick Comrie

Hello, I'm Rick Comrie. Born and raised in Edmonton. I grew up in the Pleasantview Community. I had my first business at the age of 12 delivering papers for the Edmonton Journal. My education from preschool to grade 7 was at Mount Pleasant then 8 and 9 to Avalon then to Harry Ainlay High. Then I went onto NAIT for Business accounting and marketing. Growing up in Pleasantview, I feel I won the lottery. Friendships lasting a lifetime. Like most kids, I was influenced by my environment. My Great Grandfather and Grandfather and my Dad were business owners, I was sure to follow. So sad to see Edmonton, converted to a European Municipal Model, such a misfit to western society. Edmonton was once known as the "City of Champions," a distant memory now. Edmonton was once a vibrant thriving business hub reduced to what you see today. Homelessness, crime, joblessness, business failure, etc., etc., etc. There is a solution."

*The Questions:

IE/ Why do you want to run for Mayor?

Rick Comrie/ Our city is desperate for true leadership! The taxpayer is being shunned by an Ideology void of democracy.

IE/ Can you tell us about your past or current experiences that you think could possibly benefit/ translate to your position as a member of City Council?

RC/ My experience has taught me that I don't have all the answers but we need stability and balance but it's the taxpayers' voice that matters. Edmontonians are resilient, collectively we can manage our way through these difficult times.

IE/ What do you think are the 4 or 5 biggest issues facing Edmonton right now that you want to focus on most?

RC/ As I study Edmonton's current "markers" I realize how poorly the Mayor and our city councillors have performed. The last 8 years are nothing to be proud of. The Markers represent the issues. Markers are: Crime rate, Unemployment rate, Suicide rate, Business closures, Homelessness, Policing/ Budget, Administration cost, Functionality poor. These markers represent the good or bad standing in the city of Edmonton. As I study these numbers they are a major concern. Edmonton has the fourth highest crime rate in Canada, nothing to be proud of!

IE/ What do you think are some of the issues/struggles affecting your particular ward that you would like to focus on most?

RC/ To bring trust and faith back to Government, to allow the people's voice to be heard!! And to guard against the erosion of our rights and freedoms.

IE/ What are some of the city/community initiatives that you loved and would like to expand upon?

RC/ City and community initiatives, it's possible we are trying to do too much ad a re-evaluation of all initiatives needs to be looked at.

IE/ What are some of the city/community initiatives that you are/were against, and what would you do differently?

RC/ Same as above.

IE/ Do you think elected officials, such as City Councillors, should be able to block people on social media sites like Twitter?

RC/ Mayors and councillors must never be allowed to control free speech. Social media platforms and other forms of Media must be open to free speech. Our greatest threat as a country is misplaced ideology that defies Democracy.

IE/ When it comes to COVID-19 restrictions, what do you think we got wrong (if anything) as a city or province, and is there anything you would want to do differently (municipally OR provincially)?

RC/ I understand the chief medical officer can override the decisions of government. If that is true it should be changed. I believe the governments should have allowed society to function on a per monthly basis, open one month closed one month.

IE/ What is your favourite thing about living in Edmonton?

RC/ My favorite thing about living in Edmonton. Hmmm is hard to say now as I'm so disappointed. I hold the mayor and city councillors responsible, quite frankly our city is a mess!!! I blame the current mayor, he is not being honest and he is hiding "something."

IE/ Can you describe yourself in 5 words or less?

RC/ Honest, passionate, compassionate, sincere and trustworthy.

Thank you, Rick!
