I Heart Is Named 'Best In Edmonton'!

The best in Edmonton's online community was honoured last weekend at the third annual Yeggies!

IT'S a great feeling when you're recognized for the hard work you've put into something, am I right?! Yes, of course I'm right!

Whether it's an appreciative 'thank you' for doing the dishes or winning a frickin' YEGGIE AWARD for a local blog about to celebrate its sixth anniversary, it feels pretty damn good!

The Yeggies were handed out Saturday, March 9th

I am so excited and honoured to announce that I Heart Edmonton was just named 'Best In Edmonton' at the third annual Yeggies, which recognizes the best in Edmonton's online and social media community.

"The Yeggies is an awards show that highlights some of the amazing talent we have here in Edmonton," it says on their official website. "From people who code websites themselves to those who write, speak, draw, and all on their own time, Yeggies recipients inspire, evoke, inform, educate and entertain us. And they do it because they have a passion for it."

This initiative was started in 2013 by some of the most prolific and well-known social media experts in #yeg, including Adam Rozenhart and Brittney Le Blanc. And it continues to grow every year.

This year's 18 Yeggie medals were handed out Saturday night at La Cite francophone d'Edmonton, hosted by Rozenhart and Trent Wilkie. It was unfortunate that I was not able to make it to the show, but I was able to catch the last half hour's live Twitter feed.

I Heart Edmonton was named Best in Edmonton at the 3rd annual Yeggies!

That was my favourite Tweet ever: "The Yeggie for Best in Edmonton goes to @iheartedmonton!"

Honestly, it was awesome just being a part of the show, let alone winning my first Yeggie! So, thank you again to the amazing folks who put this show together, all of whom volunteered their own time.

Did You Know? (Boston Pizza)

e A LTHOUGH the name may lead you to believe otherwise, the Canadian staple of Boston Pizza was conceived right here in the city of Edmonton. Greek immigrant Gus Agioritis opened the doors to Boston Pizza & Spaghetti House back in 1964, with almost no experience in the restaurant business, but by 1970 there were 17 BP locations (15 franchised) in Western Canada. In 1968 RCMP officer Jim Treliving (of Dragon's Den ) established the first Boston Pizza franchise, in Penticton, B.C. Along with partner George Melville , Treliving was instrumental in the rise of the pizza (etc.) chain, which now has over 370 restaurants throughout North America (known as Boston's The Gourmet Pizza in the U.S.), including two in Mexico. Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village By Emil Tiedemann From 1892  to 1930, many Ukrainian Canadians settled in central Alberta, and generations of those early settlers’ families have remained here more than a century later.  Some of the costumed historical interpreters at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, just outside of Edmonton. It’s those early years that are brought back to life at the award-winning Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village , a giant living museum that uses costumed historical interpreters to recreate early pioneer settlements on a site not far out of city limits (near Elk Island Park on the Yellowhead Highway).  This open-air attraction opened in 1974, technically as part of nearby Lamont County , on the shores of Goose Lake.
