Those who live and/or work in the city's core want more out of the region, in terms of dining, shopping and leisure BY EMIL TIEDEMANN B ETWEEN June 3rd and 25th of this year Edmonton's Downtown Business Association conducted a comprehensive survey of the area's residents and employees, to find out what they thought was missing in the core of the city. 365 downtown residents and 2,200 of its employees took part in the survey (phone and online, respectively) to determine the potential of the area. The results, released on Wednesday ( August 25 ), confirmed what most of us had already expected, that more casual dining, shopping and live entertainment were top priorities. In fact, that's just what I wondered myself when, on day two of the 2010 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival , I sat in the audience of Tom Blazejewicz 's Fortress Mentality , in which Simpson, 19, starred. Those in charge have big expectations for this year's Fringe, which has yet to disappoint BY EMIL TIEDEMANN O RGANIZERS of the 2010 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival have high hopes for the 29th edition of the world-class, 11-day event. In fact, according to Julian Mayne , executive director of Fringe Theatre Adventures , this'll be the biggest season yet! "I'm hoping we can break 100,000 this year," said Mayne. "Part of it is we have far more shows this year. It's pretty exciting. I think we should be able to do it." Mayne is referring to the 10 additional venues this year, for a total of 39, which will house 1,200 performances of 230 plays by nearly 1,000 artists. Them are some big numbers, Winnipeg! But when it comes to our world-class Fringe fest, there's no question. I'm there! So imagine my glee that the countdown has finally come to an end. That's right, the 29th annual Edmonton International Theatre Fringe Festival --the largest and oldest on the continent!--is upon us, running from Thursday ( August 12 ) until Sunday the 22nd . This year's theme is "We'll Show You Ours." More than 500 artists from around the globe descend on our turf to put in over 1,000 performances during the 11-day extravaganza. And it kicks off with the " Performer's Parade " tomorrow night (Aug. 12) at 7:30PM.
